Tarot – A brief history

The tarot deck and a deck of cards you know today come from the same source. Back in the 1390s, an Italian Duke had an artist create 22 pictorial scenes designed for a game called trumps, along with these scenes, there were four suits of numerical cards 1 (ace) to 10, along with a page, knight, queen and king. This is the first tarot related recording in history, and although there have been links to ancient societies, but there has been no evidence confirming this. Through the years, the trump game separated and became what is known today the deck of cards becoming the four suits we know today, from ace to 10, jack, queen and king, and the tarot being made up of 2 separate decks, the Major and Minor Arcana, which is made up of 78 cards, today.

The Major Arcana

The 22 pictorial scenes are today known as the Major Arcana, beginning with The Fool, followed by The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress, The Emperor, The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot, Strength, The Hermit, Wheel of Fortune, Justice, The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, The Devil, The Tower, The Star, The Moon, The Sun, Judgement, and ending with The World. Some people believe that these 22 cards represent phases of your life, your journey through from beginning to end. I believe that these cards can be applied more than once to your life, as we move through different cycles and stages.

The Death Card from the Major Arcana

This is the one card that has the most trepidation set against it. The Death card is not, as the name leads you to believe, about death, but the transformation and revelation of the old to the new you. Think of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. Throughout life, you change, and some events and people leave bigger impacts upon you to effect a change within you. That’s what this card represents, not what the media and movie industries’ perception of it.

The Minor Arcana

If the Major Arcana is viewed as the big events throughout life, then the minor arcana are the little details that go with those events. The Minor Arcana is made up of four suits, Wands (or staves), Cups, Pentacles (or Coins) and Swords, and each suit has an ace to 10, plus a Page, Knight, Queen and King. As a brief outline, Wands represent inspiration and communication, Cups represent emotions, Pentacles represent money and material possessions and Swords represent conflicts and issues. The Page, Knight, Queen and King representations vary depending on the suit.

What Tarot is used for?

The tarot spread throughout Europe by the hands of Romany, and this is why it is linked with fortune telling, and other divination tools such as palmistry, tea leaves, runes, crystal balls and such. However, that is not all of what tarot can do. As a tarot reader, my role isn’t to tell your future but to help guide you through hard times. The tarot is a tool for advice, and guidance. Yes, there are some predictions, but there are no guarantees that everything that has been spoken about in a reading will actually occur. You will change things just by knowing about them, you can plan and work things through, therefore altering what has been spoken about. If you choose to deal with the problems that are troubling you, you can move forward through the next phase of your life knowing where you stand. The choice is always yours, and what you make of a reading is up to you.

What are Angel and Oracle cards?

Angel Cards are actually a type of Oracle Card, though the two terms seem to be used synonymously. There are Tarot Cards, with their deep rooted history and associations, and Oracle Cards. Oracle Cards can be Angel Cards, Unicorn Cards, Fairy Cards, and Love Cards. I’ve even seen Seashell and Flower cards. The list is endless. Their purpose is always the same though: to gently guide, protect and help us on our journey through life.

Whether you are a believer or not, there are more forces at work in our daily lives than you or I could imagine. Every religion, from recorded history, speaks of Angels or, ‘messages from God’, in various forms. Call them what you like; God, Angels, spirits, passed over loved ones. It doesn’t matter what label we decide to place. Just that there ‘is’ another side and they work tirelessly and effortlessly, helping us at every turn.

What is ‘Reiki’?

Reiki is a spiritual practice developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui, has since been adapted by various teachers of varying traditions. It uses a technique commonly called palm healing or hands-on-healing as a form of alternative medicine. By placing hands in certain positions and locations lightly across the body, this allows the healing energy of reiki to flow into the client, balancing and healing chakras, any troubling ailments, whilst shifting negative energy out.

What is ‘distance/absent healing’?

This form of healing allows Jewel to connect with clients who are in other parts of the UK and the world who require or desire a one to one healing session but are not able to connect with Jewel physically. Distance healing offers the same benefits a client receives with a Reiki or Healing session, from within the comfort of their home, at a time where you are able to be at peace and relax.
